KAKADU NATIONAL PARK INFO

Kakadu National Park is considered to be one of the world's natural marvels; attracting more than 230,000 visitors per year.

Listed as a World Heritage site due to its flora, fauna and cultural significance; Kakadu in size is approximately 20,000 km's square, 2/3 the size of Belgium or Poland and is the third largest National Park in the world. It is the only national park to contain an entire river system within its boundaries; known as the South Alligator River. Three primary landscapes divide Kakadu into seven plant communities which accommodate about 2000 different species of plants overall. The are more than 10,000 species of insects, 280 species of birds, 117 species of reptiles, 60 species of mammals and 53 different species of fresh water fish.

The indigenous Australians are the traditional owners who live in Kakadu National Park and have done so for more than 40,000 years. This is evident by the thousands of rock art paintings/carvings and dreamtime stories and legends that record the creation of the landscape and history of the inhabitants from pre-estaurine periods up to 20th century European settlement. The Aboriginal people are the original ancient hunters and gatherers who still live a semi-traditional lifestyle and play an integral role in land conservation and the management of this vast and intriguing wilderness.

SWIMMING DANGEROUSLY

I know more than I care to about hairballs. If I leave a suitcase open on the floor, when packing for a trip or returning from one, invariably I find a hairball coughed up on my clothes, signaling some irritation with my travels. I have yet to determine if it's the cats, my wife, or some combination of the two who's sending these not-so-subtle messages. But it's my familiarity with the object in question that gives me the confidence to declare, "That's a hairball coughed up by a crocodile."

My proclamation is in response to our Aboriginal guide asking, "Does anybody know what this is?" He's holding up a fuzzy brown object about the size of a soccer ball. "Right," he answers, silencing the snickering. Then he admonishes us: "Keep those hands inside the boat at all times. That hairball used to be a wild pig."

We're in Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territory. Every river, creek, and billabong around here has a sign that says: "Crocodiles inhabit these waters. Danger!" A graphic element shows crocodile jaws crunching a stick figure.

Clearly the plot line at Kakadu is more predictable than a Freddy Kruger movie: If there's trouble, the croc did it. So my connecting a crocodile to the hairball wasn't a wild guess. Harder to explain are my next words: "I want to go swimming." Read on

3 DAY KAKADU TOUR WITH THE CRAZY AUSTRALIAN TOUR GUIDE!
When arriving to Darwin airport we were not sure what to think of the Northern Territory. When asking around the town most people seemed to agree that if me and my wife were to do one thing, it should be a Kakadu Tour. At the time id heard about the location and so we decided to book a tour with one of the local hostels! Anyway, Kakadu was much much more than I expected and I've travelled quiet a bit in my time and I must say... When your in Kakadu, you can really feel how old and sacred the place is! Can't quiet put my finger on it, but thank you for a great tour!
