KANGAROO ISLAND INFO
Named after its abundance of Kangaroos by English explorer Matthew Flinders, Kangaroo Island is a cultural icon of Australia. Some of the activities the island offers are swimming and surfing, exploring shipwrecks, checking out beautiful landscapes and unique wildlife.
Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is 112 kilometres south-west of Adelaide and at its closest point to the mainland, it is 13 kilometres offshore from Cape Jervis, South Australia.
Kangaroo Island was separated from mainland Australia by a rise in sea level more than 9,000 years ago. Stone tools found on the island suggest that Aboriginal people lived there about 11,000 years ago. It is supposed that they disappeared in 200 BC. Theories about the cause include disease and in-breeding, warfare, climatic change or exodus.
