 TASMANIA INFO

Some call it the Island of Inspiration, and its easy to see why! Tasmania is home to natural rainforest, sprawling wildlife and breathtaking landscapes and wine. For anyone visiting Australia, you can't go wrong with exploring this wonderful region.

Both a state and an island, Tasmania is located 240km just south of mainlaind Australia and is separated by the Bass Strait.
Covering an area of 68,401 square kilometres Tasmania is the 26th largest island in the world and is home to approx 500,000 residents of whom half live in the great Hobart region.

Almost 37% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites. This makes it a key location for travellers interested in all things wild.
The state is named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who made the first reported European sighting of the island on 24 November 1642. Tasman named the island "Anthony van Diemen's Land" after his sponsor Anthony van Diemen, the Governor of the Dutch East Indies. The name was later shortened to Van Diemen's Land by the British. It was officially renamed Tasmania in honour of its first European discoverer on 1 January 1856.
