 TIWI ISLAND INFO 

Extremely isolated and sensitive of its privacy, the Tiwi Islands are home to one of Australia's most unique Aboriginal Cultures.
The Tiwi Islands are part of Australia's Northern Territory and are located 100 km north of Darwin. They comprise of Melville Island and Bathurst Island, with a combined area of 8,320 square kilometres. Outsiders are forbidden to venture into this area unless carrying a permit or on a tour.

The Tiwi islands are separated from mainland Australia by the Apsley Strait, which connects Saint Asaph Bay in the north and Shoal Bay in the south. 

 

The Islands are occupied by the Tiwi people, and have been since before European settlement in Australia during the early 17th century. The Tiwi islanders are an Indigenous Australian people that are culturally and linguistically distinct from those of mainland Australia. The total population of the islands number at approx 2,100. 91.3% of whome are Aboriginal. Most residents speak Tiwi as their first language and English as a second language and generally live in Nguiu on Bathurst Island, and Pirlangimpi and Milikapiti on Melville Island.
